Risk Assessment & Decision Making

Summary

Risk assessment & decision making involves estimating the likeliness and consequence of various risks involved in any resource project.

Introduction

The resource sector involves geological, mining, occupational safety and health,
environmental and process risks in addition to metal price risk etc which can impact on the project. A risk assessment must be carried out for all development projects as a matter of course even at the study stage. This approach is critical at an early stage to identify the key risks.

Process Plant Design

(1 Day Training Course)

Summary

Planning and testwork for process plant design.

Introduction

A process plant represents a substantial capital investment. When establishing the design and engineering of mineral processing projects, it is important to undertake the appropriate metallurgical testwork early in the timeline. This ensures effective characterisation and evaluation of the ore bodies from a metallurgical standpoint. Companies frequently fail to prioritise these critical aspects of a resource, addressing them as an afterthought, which can lead to potentially disastrous consequences. This full-day workshop is intended to provide a “how to” starting with drill care and arriving at an optimum comminution and mineral processing circuit for a project. The workshop includes lectures, workshop/discussions and simulation examples.

Key Learning Outcomes

Attendees will gain essential knowledge of the metallurgical planning and testwork required when evaluating an ore body from the perspective of developing a metallurgical flow sheet and subsequent plant design. A process plant represents a large capital expenditure and the testwork undertaken when characterising the ore deposit needs to be efficiently planned and managed to achieve optimal flow sheet and plant design to facilitate the highest recovery and production outcomes. Detailed information is provided for undertaking design of a comminution and beneficiation circuit. Consideration is also given to the design of CIP/CIL circuits and froth floatation circuits.

Mine Dewatering

(1 Day Training Course)

Summary

Mine dewatering control and management.

Introduction

Dewatering in the mining sector is an essential process of removing water from a location and is crucial in accessing underground areas.

Groundwater can pose major engineering, financial and environmental problems to the mine; every mine site needs to account for dewatering during its operation. Dewatering needs for each site vary depending on environmental and geological considerations. Since most mine operations are susceptible to flooding, uncontrolled water levels can lead to catastrophic flooding that shuts down operations with costly consequences.

To tackle these challenges, it is crucial that the groundwater conditions, project requirements and site availability are thoroughly studied. A reliable dewatering plan is essential to ensure a steady supply of process water throughout a mine site while also removing excess water from working areas to allow for excavations, tunnels, shafts and other constructions to be built below the natural groundwater level.

Selecting the right dewatering design is a critical step in any mining project. Several methods can be employed to effectively control groundwater for construction and mining. Three major dewatering categories are:

  • Isolating water from the excavation site
  • Allowing water to flow into the excavation and be pumped away by sump pumping
  • Lowering the water table in advance by deepwells
  • Removing water behind pitwalls

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Learn the basic units related to mine dewatering

Lithium Processing

(1 Day Training Course)

Summary

The mining, processing and production of battery grade lithium has seen incredible growth and profitability over the last 5 years.

Introduction

Not all lithium ores are suitable and will result in a successful project. This course looks at the occurrence, mineralogy, end uses and specifications, beneficiation, thermal treatment, hydrometallurgical options, lithium recovery and recent project histories.

Australian Recent History

Australia has become the world’s largest producer of lithium globally, being driven by a number of projects. Talison’s expansion at Greenbushes and the commissioning of a number of projects has lead to Australia currently producing around 43% per cent of world output. Numerous downstream plants have been announced with the two stage $700 million Lithium Hydroxide production plant in Kwinina by Tianqi nearing completion, a $200 million lithium refinery in Kalgoorlie by Neometals, a $600 million Port Hedland refinery, a $1 billion refinery in Kemerton and an additional Kwinana Refinery by the Kidman-SQM JV. It comes as other players also ramp up production, including:

Australian-owned Orocobre, which owns a brine operation in Argentina, the re-commissioning of Galaxy Resources’ Mt Cattlin operation and production starting at Neometals Mt Marion site in Western Australia. Both pilgangoora projects -Altura and Pilbara Minerals are commissioning and ramping up to design. Additiionally Towana’s Bald Hill, commenced operations in March 2018 and Mineral Resources’ Woodgina operation is orecast to come online in March 2019.

Future Expectations

Some analysts are warning this increased supply could be a problem for the dozens of new junior producers who have piled in to take advantage of strong lithium prices. In addition, the massive ramp up seen across the world could possibly lead to an oversupply for lithium; however many companies have announced expansions for processing concentrates and the production of batteries.

The lithium carbonate spot price has more than tripled in the past two years, from $6,000 a tonne to $20,000 a tonne for battery grade material. We could be on the cusp of a massive new industry. At current prices there are enormous profits to be had in the mining and production of lithium concentrates for chemicals or batteries.

Best Practices in Mineral Processing

Summary

The concepts behind best practices in mineral processing.

Introduction

The basic concept behind best practice for mineral processing is that of “inherently safer design”. This concept is based on the idea of safety being a primary consideration at every stage of the design progress, finding ways to remove risks from the process, rather than putting up barriers between them. This course focuses on the initial feasibility studies right through to the final implemented design, including the process selected, plant layout, unit operations, and the general safety of all surroundings that may be affected by the plant. These considerations should be used to adjust the design process to ensure problems are averted.

By combining the above and running through the design process, a plant design can be achieved that will deliver not only a specification product at a good profit level but will also do so with the greatest care for personnel, operability and environmental considerations, saving on considerable costs once up and running.

Key Learning Outcomes

There are many benefits to attending this course. Participants will gain an understanding on the best practices in mineral processing through a series of case studies. These case studies will act as a reference to current projects on the following topics: soft ores, hard ores, copper gold ores, magnetite ores, refractory gold ores, complex base metal ores and iron ores.
