Tantalum & Niobium

Tantalum and niobium are transitional metals with similar physical and chemical properties, and are thus commonly grouped together. Tantalum and niobium do not occur naturally as free metals, and are mostly found as components in various oxide minerals such as columbite, tantalite and pyrochlore. Ores containing these minerals are typically beneficiated to produce a tantalum or niobium concentrate, which may include:

  • Crushing
  • Grinding
  • Gravity separation
  • Magnetic separation
  • Flotation

Despite the geochemical similarities of tantalum and niobium, different processing routes are required to refine the concentrates into their respective products.
